Collection: Moss Agate

New-ish to the Grit Workshop!

Like other moss agates, it is a type of chalcedony formed when silica-rich fluids recrystallize in cavities in rock, with various minerals seeping in to create the unique patterns.

It has a variety of colors, often with a base of red, brown, orange, or yellow. The "moss" is created by mineral inclusions, such as iron and manganese oxides, that form dendritic patterns resembling branches or moss.

The mineral inclusions can appear as finely detailed filaments or more dramatic, scenic patterns hence its “cousin” material we often refer to as “Scenic Moss Agate”.
