Scenic Moss agate is a semi-precious gemstone formed from silicon dioxide. It is a form of chalcedony (not agate as the name implies!), which most often includes minerals of a green color embedded in the stone. These minerals form filaments in the chalcedony suggestive of moss. The background is a clear or milky-white quartz, and the included minerals are mainly oxides of manganese or iron. The metals can make different colors depending on their valence (oxidation state) so it’s not uncommon to see reds, oranges, yellows and even purple or pink tones of “moss”.
Despite its name, moss agate does not contain organic matter and is usually formed from weathered volcanic rocks.
This material lives up to its name and will have you enthralled by all the scenic aesthetics it provides.
Enjoy!
